Faux Shou Sugi Ban

META Cremation Urn Sale

As it turns out, shou sugi ban, or the yakisugi technique, does not work reliably on individual small wood components.  The full length of a board is needed to create dimensional stability.  The parts for this variation on the META Cremation Urn were warping, checking, cracking, and otherwise becoming unusable during production too often to continue.  The faux shou sugi ban (faux sugi ban?) that I came up with to replace it is reliable.  Despite this, it is labor-intensive and not any fun.  I stopped producing them and forgot about a stash of components finished this way.  Aril is offering these at a significant discount to clear space.

I would make these special order, but they are simply not viable as a production item.
